Olvera Street
Pueblo De Los Angeles Historic Park
845 N. Alameda Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Situated just north of the main business/commercial district of downtown LA is a piece of history known as Olvera Street. Olvera Street is considered to be the "birthplace of Los Angeles" and is also known as El Pueblo Historic Monument. This original settlement of Los Angeles was built by settlers in 1781.
Today Olvera Street has been refurbished and restore to depict the small village maintaining its original authentic Mexican look and feel as the original settlers who lived and worked in the area would have seen it. All the dozens of buildings that line the street that make up this village have old Adobe Mexican facades that create a quaint and romantic feel of old Mexico. The village has a total of 27 buildings all with their own unique colors and atmosphere. Olvera Street itself is not really a street but an alley with each of the buildings maintaining a street address on the main perimeter streets that surround the complex.
The Mexican culture is alive and vibrant along Olivera Street. Almost always packed, the main thoroughfare is full of tourists, locals, street vendors selling such exotic Mexican treats as fresh hot buttery churros, taquitos and tacos to more tangible items such as pinatas, puppets and arts and crafts.
During the weekends this strip comes to alive with music as a variety of independent artists perform Mariachis music and dances.
