The Santa Monica Pier is the ground zero spot for renting bicycles and roller blades to explore the beaches of the LA area from Venice up to the Pacific Palisades. Radiating out from the pier like strands of a spider web from the center are bike paths that extend up to 4 miles north and south from the Santa Monica Pier enabling riders and bladders the opportunity to interact and explore the miles of coastlines that include volleyball courts, beach performers, dining spots and more.
At the base of the Santa Monica Pier a variety of kiosks where visitors can rent bikes and roller blades. At a cost of $6 an hour or $15 a day visitors can pick up a bike or rollerblade and set out. For those looking for more of an adventure and added stimulation, take the path south, towards Venice. Its about a 20 minute ride but eventually you will be in the heart of Venice Beach. From there you will see Ocean Front Walk, muscle Beach and all the weirdness, excitement and carnival atmosphere that goes with all things Venice. You can take your bike into the main shopping areas and check out the countless tshirt stalls, street performers and dining spots.
Visitors looking for a more tranquil ride will want to set out north from the pier towards the Pacific Palisades. This route takes visitors through wide open beaches with nothing but the ocean to the left and the PCH to the right. The path eventually snakes its way out of Santa Monica and towards the Pacific Palisades area of LA. This ride will expose visitors to nothing but natual beauty, nature and tranquility. The path ends in the Pacific Palisades area at Temescal Canyon Road and the PCH, about 3 miles from the Santa Monica Pier. It is this stretch of beach where riders will observe dozens of volleyball courts that typically come to life on weekends with locals engaging in fierce competitions.
During the weekends the path in both directions from south of the pier or north of the pier can be extremely busy and hectic. So while it is fun to take in the sights, it is also advisable to keep your eyes open at all times for other bikers, roller bladders and joggers. In addition there are constant groups of families with young children crossing these paths often at unpredictable moments. Staying alert is a must to avoid even the most minor of collisions.
