Traffic horror stories about LA and how long and tough it takes to get from point A and B are very well documented, and, like a lot of things that are theatrics in this town, very exaggerated. While indeed any visitor to LA is bound to run into some traffic problems, they aren't as hyped or insane as the average local makes it sound.
One of the biggest myths to LA is that you have to take a freeway to get anywhere in the city. This is not true. While its ideal to stay on the freeway system when traveling distances of 20 miles or more, the entire city, and the areas with all the sights and beaches are all linked together by city streets. LA also has an extensive bus network and subway line.
The best times to travel the streets of LA are in the morning and late evening time. During the day after 11AM to about 7pm is the heaviest travel period. The 405, 10 and 101 freeways are usually the busiest during this perod.
