Formerly known as the Hyatt, the Andaz in West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip still remains under corporate ownership of the Hyatt Corporation only with the new look and name. On January 9th, 2009, the Hyatt reopened the hotel as the Andaz, the second Andaz in a new line of Andaz resorts by Hyatt. The hotel is 14 stories with 257 rooms including 20 suites. Located in the heart of the Sunset Strip, the hotel is situated in the exact center of all the lights, sounds and excitement the Sunset Strip has to offer. Whether you make a right or a left when exiting the lobby there is a long list of choices in dining, nightlife and shopping experiences along Sunset Blvd.
The Andaz West Hollywood traces its history back to 1963 when it originally opened as the Gene Autry Hotel. Do it to its prominent location along the Sunset Strip and being surrounded on all sides by major night clubs, the hotel quickly established itself as the premier accommodations choice for many famous music bands stopping in LA. The hotel quickly picked up the nick name riot house and riot Hyatt and was home to such acts as Led Zeppelin, The Who and Rolling Stones. It is from room 1015 of the hotel that Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones once dropped a tv out the window where it fell ten stories to the street below. Little Richard and Lionel Richard also have called the Andaz home.
Today the Andaz is a modern contemporary property in the heart of Sunset's busy strip catering to both business and leisure travelers. Since its renovation from the Hyatt to an Andaz property the hotel has made strides to position itself as a world class hotel catering to every need, from flat screen tvs, sophisticated room service options to state of the art in room work stations. If you book a room on the south side of the hotel you will enjoy spectacular views of all of Los Angeles and into downtown. The property also affords a variety of high end dining options that are frequented by the local LA set.
Note that if your travels take you to Brentwood, Santa Monica or the westside during peak rush hours, the drive maybe as long as an hour. On off times and weekends the drive is 20 minutes or less.
Do to the high traffic area of the Sunset Strip, maneuvering this area via an automobile can be tricky. During evening and weekends this stretch often becomes grid locked with party goers, visitors and locals. You will find a heavy police force along this stretch during these times as well. In addition during the evenings and weekends there is a great deal of foot traffic along the sidewalk in front of the hotel.
